Define domestic abuse
refers to a pattern of behaviour in which one partner in a relationship seeks to gain or maintain power over the other person.
Examples of domestic abuse
physical violence, emotional or psychological abuse (criticism, manipulation, threats), sexual abuse, economic abuse, coercive control.
Who are the typical victims of domestic abuse?
can affect anyone, regardless of gender, age, race, or socioeconomic status. 1.4m women and 751,000 men affected in 2022/3 in England and Wales.
Who are the typical offenders of domestic abuse?
can be anyone. it is a complex issue with no single cause or type of offender.
What is the level of public awareness surrounding domestic abuse?
increased significantly in recent years, thanks to various efforts by advocacy groups, media campaigns, and legislative changes. however, awareness levels still vary based on factors such as location, cultural norms, and individual understanding.
Is domestic abuse considered criminal or deviant?
both. specific laws address domestic abuse, defining it as a crime, and setting out penalties for offenders. it also goes against societal expectations of what is considered as acceptable behaviour within relationships.
Why is domestic abuse often not reported?
fear of retaliation, shame and stigma, fear of not being believed, isolation, economic dependence, concern for children, cultural or religious beliefs, lack of awareness/knowledge.
Give two laws that address domestic abuse
1.) the domestic abuse act 2021 includes a definition of domestic abuse, recognition of children, new offences, and local authority duties.
2.) Clare’s Law, aka the Domestic Violence Disclosure Scheme, is a police policy that gives people the right to know if their partner or ex-partner has any history of violence or abuse.
What happened to Abi Blake?
she was abused by her partner, Sebastian Swamy. the police was called multiple times, but she never pressed charges, even when he started a fire while she was sleeping. he then nearly killed her by beating her up, leaving her with permanent spinal cord damage and PTSD. she left him, and in 2019, she was sentenced to 3 years and 4 months in prison for causing GBH.
