something can be legal or accepted in one country but illegal in another.
Why do cultural crimes go unreported?
- offenders believe they are justified in carrying on with these practices.
- crimes are hidden within families.
- those outside the culture feel its not their business. they don’t understand it. they don’t want to appear racist or intolerant.
What is the consequence of cultural crimes going unreported?
horrific crimes go unchallenged, and victims are not protected.
Who is Soraya Mire?
a victim of FGM. as a result she suffered from a life threatening infection. she made a documentary to raise awareness and help victims.
Why did the crimes against Soraya Mire not get reported?
She didn’t report it as it had been normalised within her culture. Her mother didn’t stop it as it was seen as something a good mother should do in her culture to prepare their child.
Is FGM practiced worldwide?
FGM is practiced in over 30 countries. It was banned in the US in 1996.
