actions that violate formal laws and are punishable by the state.

theft, assault, murder, illegal downloading of copyrighted material.

actions that violate societal norms but are not necessarily illegal.
Examples of deviant behaviour
dressing in unconventional attire, having an excessive number of pets, socially frowned upon behaviours such as gossiping.

actions that are against both the law and social norms.

Vandalism eg graffiti, anti social behaviour eg playing loud music that disturbs neighbours.

the shared expectations and rules that guide behaviour of people within social groups.

deeply held beliefs about what is good, right and acceptable.

what is considered deviant in one culture might be perfectly acceptable in another.
Define power and authority
those in power often define what is considered deviant.
