Benchmark level
Student is at or above grade level.
Strategic level
Student is slightly as risk for mastery of grade level material.
Intensive level
Student highly at risk of grade level mastery . Supplemental material will be necessary.
Three reading levels
- Frustration
- Instructional
- Independent
Frustration Level
Student is not able to read the book at all; difficult and they don’t understand.
Instructional Level
Needs teacher support in order to read and understand the material.
Independent Level
Understands concepts, understands what’s going on, can read no problem.
CLOZE
Reading assessment used to determine a child’s reading level. Paragraph is written with words missing. If the child reads the paragraph completely they are at the independent reading level. If they get half they are at the instructional reading level. If they cannot read it at all they are at the frustration reading level.
Running Record
- allows for determination of what errors are being made.
i. e. pronunciation, filling in words that aren’t there and self-correction
Oral Reading Fluency Assessment
1 min to read a passage
Document how many words per minute.
Subtract errors in order to determine reading level.
