Closed Spec
Proprietary (Closed) Spec: does not allow for substitution, and typically used to control aesthetics, function, and quality. • Identify name, model number, finish type, and submittal requirement.
Open Spec
Descriptive (Open) Spec: used in competitive bidding, and does not give the level of control as closed spec. • Describe characteristics, materials, finishes, workmanship, and fabrication of products and give a list of comparable manufactures.
Performance Spec: used with vendors who propose products they think will meet requirements • Describe only the desired/required results. Give no characteristics or manufacturers.
Reference standard spec: description based on the performance of material/assembly in comparison to reference standards set by the accepted authority. For example ASTM (American standard for testing and materials), ANSI (American national standards institute), UL (underwriters laboratory)
Master format spec Part 1
Part 1 – General – coverage or scope of a section, administrative, procedural requirements unique to section Example: Summary, References, Definitions, Submittals, Quality Assurance, Delivery, storage, handling, Project and Site conditions, Sequencing and Scheduling, Warranty, Maintenance

Part 2 – Materials –
Materials, Products, and equipment In detail, the quality of items required for incorporation into the project.
Example: Manufacturers, Materials, Manufactured Units, Equipment, Components, Accessories, Mixes, Fabrication, Sources of Quality Control
Master format spec Part 3
Part 3 – Execution
– Details the manner in which products, materials, and equipment will be installed. (also testing)
Example: Examination, Preparation, Erection Installation, Field Quality Control, Adjusting, Cleaning, Demonstration, Protection, Schedules

Requirements for bidding and contracting, the agreement, bonds and certificates, general conditions, supplementary conditions, addenda, modifications

Quality Assurance
Relatively new concept in management practice
American Society for Quality (ASQ) Definition:
all the planned and systematic activities implemented within the quality system that can be demonstrated to provide confidence that a product or service will fulfill requirements for quality.
Assuring outcomes are desirable
Practice is confirmed by Quality Control checks
Quality Management
Quality Planning - Educating your organization on quality standards applicable to that firm’s culture, and the processes established to produce work.
Quality Assurance - The application of processes during the design phase to ensure the product comes out of an acceptable (…hopefully exceptional!) level of quality.
Quality Control - Process involving the testing and inspection to determine its level of quality
Quality Improvement - Process that establishes practices for understanding feedback and lessons learned, and using that knowledge to enhance the quality of work in future projects.
