DNA/RNA related definitions Flashcards
Telomere
Repetitive DNA at each end of a chromatid. Prevents chromosomal deterioration during replication.
How telomeres function
Prevent chromosomal deterioration. During replication, extreme ends of telomere are not copied. Telomere gets shorter. Cells stop dividing when telomeres are too short.
Intron
Non-coding sequence of DNA within gene (intervening sequence) that is cut out by enzymes when RNA is made into mature mRNA.
Exon
Coding sections of RNA transcript or DNA encoding it (are translated into proteins)
Nucleosome
DNA molecule wound around 8 histone proteins
Which bases are purines?
A, G
Difference between purine and pyrimidine
Purine has 2 rings (in pentose sugar), pyrimidine has 1
