Cytosine and Guanine
Frederick Griffith (1928)
discovered that heat-killed virulent bacterial cells release hereditary material that can be transferred to harmless cells making them harmful. (something not harmful can become harmful)
transformation
The transfer of genetic material from one cell organism to another cell/organism
Oswald Avery (1940’s)
wanted to determine if protein, DNA or RNA was transferred in Griffith’s experiments
Discovered that DNA was responsible for the transformation in Griffith’s experiments.
Hershey-Chase Experiment (1952):
Martha Chase and Alfred Hershey confirmed that DNA is the hereditary (DNA is what new generations inherit the genes from) material using viruses that enter bacteria called bacteriophages
They used radioactive isotopes to make the protein and the DNA.
James Warson and Francis Crick (1953)
with the help of a X-ray diffraction photo taken by Rosalind Franklin and Maurice Wilkens, Watson and Crick were able to determine the double helix structure of DNA.
DNA is made up of subunits called
nucleotides
what are the 3 parts nucleotides consist of
Deoxyribose: a five-carbon sugar
A phosphate group: consists of phosphorous (P) bonded to 4 oxygen (O)
Nitrogenous Base: consists of nitrogen and carbon
What are the handrails of the ladder
The deoxyribose and the phosphatase
