DNA and RNA Flashcards
Describe the structure of RNA
Single stranded
RIbose sugar
AUGC bases
3 types of RNA?
3; messenger, transfer, ribosomal RNA
does each type of RNA fold differently?
yes
Define: messenger RNA
carries genetic message to the ribosomes where the message is translated into protein
Define: ribosomal RNA
RNA: forms 2/3 of ribosomes/large subunit (1/3 proteins)
Define: transfer RNA
molecules that carry amino acids to ribosomes where they are used to form proteins
Function of DNA?
contains genetic instructions that code for protein synthesis
Describe structure of DNA
2 strands (template/non-template aka coding strand)
deoxyribose sugar
ATGC bases
Define: template strand
guides construction of pre-mRNA with complementary base sequence
Define: non template strand
not copied, but has same sequence as the pre-mRNA except U instead of T
How can DNA be seen?
Scanning tunnelling microscopy, not light microscope
Define: gene
Segment of a chromosome that codes for a specific polypeptide (21,000 in total)
Define: chromosomes
dna combined with histone proteins)
