DNA Flashcards
Acronym DNA
DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid)
DNA key statements (4)
❖ carries the body’s genetic info
❖ is different for every person
❖ determines your characteristics
❖ is made up of chemical building blocks called nucleotides.
Nucleotides how do they attach (chemical bonds)
The nucleotide attach to each other (A with T, and G with C) forming chemical bonds.
What are the four bases
adenine (A)
guanine (G)
thymine (T)
cytosine (C)
What are genes
A gene is a cell’s DNA.
Genes possess coded instructions for making everything the body needs, especially proteins.
humans have
~25,000 genes.
Chromosomes from each sex cell
Humans have 46. 23 from sperm cell and 23 from the egg.
SEX CHROMOSOMES (male)
Sperm cells contain either an X or a Y chromosome.
male chromosome gender
Boys: Receive a Y chromosome from their father and an X mother.
Female chromosome (gender)
Girls: Receive an X chromosome from each of their parents.
Mother and Father chromosomes
Mother always gives X thus Father determines x or y
Nucleotide bases what they do. (base pairs)
there base pairs, which connect the two DNA strands.
