DMH4- Gut Dysbiosis Flashcards
Define the term dysbiosis and what can it be caused by?
Microbial imbalance- disruption of microbiota in the gut
Caused by: Age Genetics Stress Diet Early life Antibiotics Drugs Obesity Infections Cancer Pollutants Circadian disruption
What illnesses/diseases can preturbing the microbiome be linked to ?
Cancer GI disorders COPD Depression Autism Obesity Diabetes Asthma Arthritis
What diseases are linked to intestinal dysbiosis ?
Clostriduym difficile infection
IBS (UC and CD)
Metabolic syndrome (onesity, type II diabetes and heart disease)
Rheumatoid arthritis
Describe C.diff in terms of it what gram it is, wheather it is anerobic or aerobic and what it produces
Gram positive
anarobic rod
Produces endospores and toxins
What does opportunistic pathogen-pathobiant mean?
Only disrupt if the conditions in the environment change but normally do not have any effect
Why does C.diff only have a small population inn the gut?
The growth of other micobes inhibit C.diff growth
What would first line of treating C.diff be ?
Vancomycin or metonidazol but patients experience recurrence
What can c.diff infectrions lead to ?
Pseudomembranous colitis accute inflammation and thickaning of the colon
Life threatening- colectomy and stoma
How can SCFA influence dysbiosis ?
if too high or too low
diseases may arise
gut microbitoa can produce SCFA which can influence the circulatroy system: vagas nerves affecting CNS and other organs around the body.
This can cause obesity sutism mood disorders alzheimer disease parkinsons schizophrenia multiple sclerosis
