DMH3- Oral cavity Flashcards
Define plaque
A soft biofilm on the teeth containing saliva, food particles and a comminty of diverse bacteria
e.g steptococci
What does steptococci do to the teeth?
They produce adhesive polysaccharides whoich gell the biofilm to teath and creat an anerobic environment
What do bacteria do th sugar in the teeth and how is this related to tooth decay?
Bacteria ferment sugars to lactic acid, causing damage to enamal. Together with proteolytic enzymes, this causes caries (tooth decay)
What is tartar?
A hard yellow/brown matrix of biofilm that is difficult to remove
What cab plaque and tartar build up lead to?
Gingivitis (gum inflammation) and poeriodontisis (gum disease: bone loss around tooth)
What can bacteria do if the gums are inflammed?
They can enter the blood stream
What can gum disease increase the risk of ?
Cardiovascular diseasse and stroke
Sterptococci and other bacteria cab cause blood clots, pericarditis
How can you keep good gum health?
Remove plaque
Regualar dental appointments
Fluoride toothpaste
Chlorohexidine rather than alcohol bases mouth wash
Cleaning deep pockets by dental hygenist
True/false? Smoking aters mouth microbiome. WHY?
True
More anerobic species
Fewer aerobic species
Linked to periodontis
