Tissue
A group of similar cells with a shared function.
Epithelial tissue
-Animal
Protection, energy storage, temperature regulation, excretion, absorption of nutrients, gas exchange.
Muscular tissue
-Animal
Muscular tissues function in movement.
Nervous tissue
-Animal
Capable of sending electrical impulses - quick response to stimuli.
Connective tissue
-Animal
Connect/Binds all other tissues together. Function - support, protection and movement.
Epidermal tissue
-Plant
In the aerial parts of the plant, it protects; in the roots it absorbs water and minerals.
Ground tissue
-Plant
It stores nutrients, such as starch, in storage organs, such as the stem and
root. Ground tissue cells found in the legumes of plants function in photosynthesis. Ground tissue cells of the root function in transport of water and minerals to the vascular tissue for transport to other areas of the plant.
Vascular tissue
-Plant
Primary function of vascular tissue of the transport of substances around the plant. Xylem - water and minerals, Phloem - food.
Tissue culture
Involves growing cells outside of the organisms in a sterile nutrient medium (In Vitro).
Sterile
No microorganisms present.
Organ
An organ is a group of tissues that work together to carry out a function.
Organ system
A group of organs that work together to undertake specific functions.
Digestive system
Breaking down and absorbing food.
Circulatory system
Transports substances around the body.
