Characteristics of Life Flashcards
Diversity of Life
Refers to the large variety of living organisms present on Earth.
Life
Is an organic based object that possesses the characteristics of metabolism and continuity of life.
Metabolism
The sum of all chemical reactions in the body.
Continuity of Life
Refers to cells arising from cells of the same type.
What are the characteristics of life?
- Biological organisation
- Nutrition
- Excretion
- Response
- Reproduction
Biological organisation
- Refers to the different levels of complexity in an organism.
- cell ➡️ tissue ➡️ organ ➡️ organ systems ➡️ organism ➡️ population
Nutrition
Is the way by which an organism obtains and uses food.
Autotrophic
An organism makes its own food, e.g. plants.
Heterotrophic
An organism must obtain its food from another organism.
Excretion
Is the removal of waste products of metabolism.
What is the homeostasis of mammals
37°C
Diffusion
Movement of molecules from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration.
Response
Is the way an organism reacts to stimulus (its environment).
Reproduction
Is the way in which new offspring is produced from the parents.
Sexual reproduction
Two parents involved and produces variation, e.g humans.
Asexual reproduction
One parent involved and produces no variation (identical copies of the organism), e.g strawberries.
