What is unconscious bias?
Stereotypes about certain people/groups of people that originated without me being aware.
How can discrimination show up in the workplace?
Team dynamics, recruitment, promotion, performance management.
How can an employer/line manager take steps to avoid unconscious bias?
Get to know the people specifically; record all decisions (to do with promotion, reward, recruitment) and the motives behind.
What legislation underpins this competency?
Equality Act 2010.
What does the Equality Act 2010 do?
Repealed and combined various other legislations and gives legal protection against discrimination at work and in society.
What does the RICS do about diversity and inclusivity?
RICS Inclusive Employer Equality Mark - firms can apply and sign up to inclusivity criteria.
- Gender parity in Global Exec Team for first time in RICS history
- Annual gender pay gap report which is improving year on year currently.
Why are inclusive and diverse teams important?
Society is diverse so diverse teams should be able to respond to societal needs/views better. Research shows that more diverse and inclusive businesses tend to perform better.
How do you communicate within your team?
Combination of in person, email and telephone. Phone call from team leader if not seen in person that day to review the day.
How does your team interact with the wider firm?
Meetings for business development/generation, social events.
How did Covid affect teamworking?
All online - less friendly and less easy to ask questions.
Have positive changes been made to the teamworking environment since Covid?
Back in the office more although flexible working is allowed depending on productivity and team member judgement. Social events to reconnect.
What is a good example of how your team work well?
Often an instruction will involve 2 members of the team and so provides a learning opportunity for both. All instructions are discussed as a whole team on a semi-regular basis.
