What is workplace diversity?
- Diversity in the workplace related to the acceptance and inclusion of employees of all backgrounds.
- Ensuring diversity in the workplace is an important asset of an organisation as it acknowledges the individual strengths of each employee and potential they bring.
What are the advantages of a diverse team?
- Increased productivity: a diversity if talent will result in a broader range of skills amongst the team and result in increased productivity.
- Increased creativity: Differing skill sets and perspectives within the team will increase the chances of generating solutions to workplace problems.
- Improved cultural awareness: a diverse range of cultures within the workplace allows companies to operate more effectively within a global marketplace.
Please explain your understanding of inclusion within the workplace?
- Inclusion within the workplace is creating an environment and culture where all company employees feel like they belong in the organisation.
- This results in every employee being comfortable to voice their opinions and that no one person feel excluded on the basis of their identity.
What is meant by the term unconscious bias?
- It refers to the unconscious association and assumptions that a person may have about someone solely because of their race, gender or disability.
- It can result in a lack of diversity within the workplace.
What are some types of teams?
Office team
Finance team
Project team
Design team
What are some example of when you have demonstrated team working?
- Design team meetings.
- Pre contract meetings
- Pulling together a specification - M&E, CAD team, secretary (formatting and issuing).
What is the Tuckman Theory?
- Bruce Tuckman theory focuses on how a team tackles a task, which is comprised of 5 phases
- Forming - Assembly of team + planning, collating information and bonding.
- Storming - Address task by suggesting ideas.
- Norming - Agreeing rules and values of operation.
- Performing - Identified by high levels of independence, motivation, knowledge and competence + decision making is collaborative.
- Adjourning / Transforming - End of the project and breakup of the team, the team can return to any phase but this is typically forming.
What is the Herzberg Theory?
- Created by Frederick Herzberg and is a two factor motivation theory.
- Workers are motivated to work harder through motivators such as: Empowerment, job enlargement and job enrichment.
- Workers can become demotivated if hygiene factors are not met such as; Pay, relationships and working conditions.
What particular skills have you got that contribute to team working?
I am a positive person and can identify when people are struggling, I am Patient and am good at sharing my experience to help others understand and learn.
Give me some examples of how you promote team working?
- Mentoring

- Explaining the end goal and steps required to get there
- Promoting inclusive working together
What are the key aspects of an effective team ?
- Clear objectives
- Balanced roles
- Effective processes
- Good communication
- Support and trust.
How would you deal with a member of the team who is negative towards a particular task and is disruptive ?
I would speak to the team member on a one to one basis and ask if they’re is anything wrong. I would air my though and see if they understand why and what we are doing. This could be escalated to a line manager for further review.
Can you tell me about a time you resolved a conflict in a team?
My client and their contractor had conflicts due to the clients demanding nature and overbearing. I informed the client that to maintain relationships, it might be best to let me liaise with the contractor directly to raise concerns that may occur, referencing the pre start meeting and the contract.
