Describe the ethnographic approach.
Culture is viewed as fluid, evolving, heterogeneous and conflictual rather than static, fixed, cohesive and unified. Derived from the field of anthropology.
If a social worker believes that they cannot be effective in working with a client they should do what?
Seek supervision and consider referring the client to another social worker.
If a social worker does not understand cultural beliefs, values or behaviors of a group what is the first thing they should do?
Ask the client for clarification.

To ascertain the “meaning” of a client’s cultural experiences.

Nurturing System: family, intimate friends, immediate community
Sustaining System: institutions of larger society
What are the four types of adaptation seen in bicultural identity?
- Traditional Adaptation: keep distinct behavior, values and beliefs different from the majority group
- Marginal Adaptation: individual does not adhere closely to either their ethnic group or the larger society resulting in conflict
- Assimilation: value norms of sustaining society and devalue norms of their ethnic group
- Bicultural Adaptation: individuals integrate norms, values and beliefs from both their ethnic group and larger society
What is the “Sandwich Generation?”
Adults who are taking care of their own children and their elderly parents.
