Disease transmission Flashcards
What is disease transmission?
How pathogens enter the body.
What is a pathogen?
An organism that causes disease to its host.
What is direct transmission?
This is when physical contact is made with an infected person or a contaminated surface.
This can be through needle sharing, unprotected sex and airborne pathogens like dust.
What is indirect transmission?
This is vehicle transmission, meaning it is through contact with infected food, water or blood. Also an infected vector and or droplets.
How do infectious diseases spread amongst communities?
- Inadequate sanitation like unclean water and bad sewage disposal.
- Social distancing issues due to a dense population.
- Education through health promotion.
What is the process of disease transmission?
- Infectious agent (A microorganism that can make you ill).
- Resiviour (Where germs live and grow).
- Portal of exit (How the microorganism gets out of the infected person).
- Mode of transmission (How it spread to another person).
- Portal of entry (How the microorganism gets into another person).
- Susceptible host (A pupil at risk of infection).
What is airborne transmission?
The pathogen is carried by dust or droplets in the air.
