2 forms of conversation
Transactional: spoken language used to obtain goods or services
Interactional: spoken language used to allow people to interact with each other
Adjacency pairs
a pair of utterances in a conversation that go together
Tag questions
a question converted from a statement by an appended interrogative
preferred response
a question is expected to be complemented by an answer
dispreferred response
an answer of inappropriate length, response, formality etc, tends to interrupt the smooth flow of conversation
openers
expressions or discourse markers
framing
the process of controlling a conversation
agenda setting
the initial establishment of the topic
topic management
the organisation of topics in a conversation
closers
expressions or discourse markers designed to close the conversation
self-related comment
speaker makes a moment about themself
other-related comment
speaker makes a comment about another speaker
neutral comment
speaker makes a comment about something neutral in the surroundings e.g. weather
phatic communication
speech designed to maintain social relationships and doesn’t carry significant meaning - also known as ‘small talk’
backchanneling
supportive terms that let the other speaker know you are listening
