Disabled persons indentity
Shaped by their physical or mental impairments and consequently can’t live a normal life
Disabilism example
Employers are reluctant to employ disabled people so they are more likely to be unemployed
Lowers life chances
Cannot have a better standard of living so affects their identity because they cannot identify themselves with consumer culture
Stereotypes
Stereotypes built by society - seen as object of pity or sympathy and not treated as a normal person
Affects identity bcuz not treated the same as others , stared at
Medias role
Media re inforces the stereotypes built by society as mass media representations of disabled people tend to be negative and based on charities
Social construction
Disabled sociologists are critical of medias view of disabled people and believe their identity is socially constructed by stereotypes
Gofffman blind study : supports this and came up with self fulfilling prophecy that disabled people beleive and internalise in negative labels and become dependent
Shakespeare : disabled people socialised into seeing themselves as inferior creating and shaping their identities as becoming a victim
Contradiction to it influencing
Disabled people are seen living normal lives as many have jobs working from home
Increased number of schools for disabled people allows them to learn like us
