Primary socialisation including study
Family - learn norms and values- what’s right and wrong by positive and neg sanctions ( functionalists believe it helps them integrate to society)
Gender roles - Ann Oakley - verbal appellations (good girl) and canalisation (direct children’s interests into things specific to gender)
Role modelling- imitating parents behaviour
Peers + study
Group of people similar in age/status connected by friendship
Socialised based on the desire to fit in and conform to consensus
Skelton+Francis == peer groups at school , girls and boys seperate and gendered
Cultural comfort zone – associate with those similar to us
Education + study
Meritocracy - harder u work more merits u get
Durkheim - education teacher children to play positive roles in society
Marxists - hidden curriculum – norms and values learn at school apart from formal lessons e.g. ( following rules, respect) : ideological function that benefits powerful by producing pupils who conform to demand of teachers
Labelling+ self fulfilling prophecy : once labelled naughty the student becomes naughty
Media
Representation of different social groups may influence our views e.g. Moral panic – group is seen as a threat by exxagerated reporting of an event
Slimblondeness- “ideal female” - affect the way we judge ourselves + self image
Postman : tv and internet blurred distinction between childhood and adulthood children exposed to sex images
Religion
Religious values uptill 20 century were moral codes used to shape behaviour
Morally right ( marry ) Morally wrong ( sex before marriage/being gay)
Now openly occurs suggests religious socialisation is less influential today
Modood- 67% of pakis saw religion as important

Workplace
Socialised into informal rules, duties and obligations
discipline , behaviour, team work, how to interact
Formal social control
Control by the use of written rules g laws - police inflict authority and power to enforce laws leading to negative sanctions if broken – benefit is it helps to maintain social order
Informal social control
Without use of written rules , influenced in a casual way
Family - shape child’s behaviour with rewards and punishments (elicit shame)
Media - moral panic ability to create anxiety reminds of the laws of society
Religion - concept of heaven and hell
School- rewards / punish
Work - promotion/ critisicm
