How age affects indentity
U.K. Segregated it’s members by age therefore the way old and young people are treated have a significant effect on their identity
Restricts what a person can do because of stereotypes imposed on them by society

Biology influences the way society divides people by age
5 major generational stages :
Childhood , youth , young adulthood ,middle age and old age
Childhood and studies
Childhood innocent and vulnerable stage - need to be protected
Shapes identity because they are not physically or mentally developed enough ho carry out adult tasks (driving /getting a job )
Postman : innocent child dissapearing , suggests age has less of an impact - blurred distinction
Youth and studies
Youth transition from childhood to adulthood
S cohen : media moral panic of youth shows them as a threat to society
Savage : teenagers condemned more that praised
Clarke : youth as being based on concept of rebellion
Old age and study
Associated with loneliness and isolation which is reinforced by films and tv
Affects identity as they are seen as less physically effective or uselesss – denied jobs or looked down upon if wanting to start leisure activities such as dancing
Hockey and James - concept of infantilisation - claims that the old are infantilised, helpless infants depenendent on the support of adults in society
Overcome as there are clubs for old people
