What are the mental and physical characteristics related to Down Syndrome
The children develop their motor skills more slowly
The progress more slowly
They find grammar difficult
They may find learning to talk difficult and may finds clear speech hard
They are socially sensitive and learn to behave well.
They are less coordinated at the ligaments which normally hold the joint still can be very Slack.
What is cerebral palsy
It is a physical impairment that affects movement.
Three types of cerebral palsy
Spastics CP finds that the muscles become stiff and weak
Athetoid CP has some loss of control of the posture, may make unwanted movements.
Ataxic CP, usually has problems with balance ,shaky hand movements & irregular speech
Adjustments that me need to be made when children with CP are in the class
Be aware of knocking limbs on entry and exit.
Need to warm up in right position to assist with circulation.
Stiff limbs need to be gently stretched.
Success may be gained by swimming on their back.
Teaching rotation is important.
Swimming on the front me take longer.
Spina bifida
Spinal cord is exposed on birth and require surgery straight away. Damage of the spinal cord. This could result in no control of Lower limbs bladder and bowel.
Upper body strength is usually good.
Horizontal rotation is essential for the child to get a safe breathing position
Epilepsy
This can range from daydreaming to violent seizures.
As a child gets older they may recognise the trigger.
Gastric tube fed babies
For one week following surgery the child should avoid swimming.
The child may participate in all normal activities as long as the Tube is secure and will not come out.
Degenerative disorders
Baby appears well at birth but begins to deteriorate .
