Cognitive Development Flashcards
What are the four major stages of cognitive development from birth to adulthood
Sensori motor
Pre-operational
Concrete operational
Formal operational
The sensori motor stage
Between birth and 1 month of age
In the first few months of an infants life they show innate reflexes automatic responses to a particular stimulus.
Many of these reflexes are designed to keep them alive.
They are spontaneous.
Sensori motor stage
Between 1 and 4 months of age.
Primary circular reactions
Repetitions - like thumb sucking.
Sensori motor stage
Between 4 and 12 months of age
Secondary circular reactions
This extends out into the environment
For example squeezing a toy that makes a noise, reaction is repeated as it makes things interesting and last longer.
Object permanence. This means the baby begins to realise that just because an object cannot be seen does not mean that it is no longer there.
Sensori motor stage
Between 12 months and 24 months
Tertiary circular reactions which is the same action taking place but using a variety of objects.
For example hitting a drum with a stick , fitting a table with a stick hitting a box with a stick hitting a parent with a stick. Each will give a different sound or reaction.
The child is beginning to developmental representation. They are beginning to use their imagination.
When does a child enter the pre operational stage
Between 2 and 7 years of age
Characteristics of the pre operational stage
Creative play hair brushes become microphones
Egocentric everything is about him
An understanding of past and present is forming
