Direct based approaches
Direct based approaches to coaching might be the style of coaching that you are most familiar with. No matter the ability of the athlete there is a time and place for direct based approaches to coaching
Direct based approaches requires coach to make all decisions relating to
- Task selection
- Task sequencing
- Structure
- Timing
- Duration
- Modification and progression
- Technique
Direct based disadvantages
- Athlete never makes decisions for themselves
- Limits athletes to find solution
Constraints based approaches
Constraints based approaches to coaching means that we are using boundaries or placing
restrictions on the learner
Individual constraints
technical skills, body size and body strength
Environmental constraints
physical environment (weather, natural light and access to facilities)
Social/cultural constraints
family expectations, peer group expectations and cultural expectations
Examples of constraints based approaches
Examples include:
* Players on the team
* Dimensions of the playing space
* Rules of the sport
