Describe a forward walk
-Stand in an upright position with the feet together and the weight held slightly forward towards the balls of the feet.
-Swing the leg forward from the hip with the ball of the foot in contact with the floor then with the heel lightly skimming the floor with slightly raised
- As the front heel moves towards Central Balance, the back heel will be released from the floor, and at the extent of the stride (central balance) the weight will be equally divided between the heel of the front foot and the ball of the back foot with the front knee straight and the back knee slightly flexed.
-the front toe will be then immediately lower as the weight of the body moves forward.
- the back foot commences moving forward with first the toe then the ball of foot skimming the floor until the feet are level and the back foot then continues forward into the next steps
Describe a backwalk
-Stand upright with feet together and the weight held over the balls of the feet.
-move the foot back with the ball of the foot skimming the floor then lower again onto the ball of the foot
- as soon as the back foot moves past the front heel, the front toe will be released from the floor so that the extent of the stride (central balance) the weight will be equally divided between the ball of the back foot and heel of the front foot. The back knee will be slightly flexed and the front knee straight
- the front foot then commences to move back first with the heel and then with the ball of the foot skimming the floor until the feet are level when the back heel will lower.
IMPORTANT THAT THE BACK HEEL LOWERS VERY SLOWLY AND WITH CONTROL

When describing rise and fall, first step of the foxtrot basic is given as “Down 1”. Does this mean throughout from a standing position we should bend our knees and lower into the first step?
No. The use of the word “down” indicates that the first step is taken at a normal level with out rise or fall.

Give two examples of what may follow the foxtrot basic if it is turned
- If commenced facing the LOD the man may turn the foxtrot basic 1/8 to the right between steps 2 and 3, having turned the lady to promenade position to follow with promenade basic
- if commenced facing diagonal to the wall, the man may turn the foxtrot basic 3/8 to the right over steps 2-4 to the end backing the LOD and follow with the right ad lib with the optional 1/2 turn to end facing LOD
Explain the closed hold as man for the foxtrot
stand in an upright position with the feet close together, the body should be braced slightly at the waist holding the head in a straight and upright position, looking directly forward.
-do not raise the shoulders - they should remain at the normal level.
-lift the left arm upwards and to the side, bending sharply at the elbow, the former pointing upwards with a slight forward slope from the elbow, which should be slightly lower than the shoulder
- the lady will place the palm of her right hand into the palm of the gentleman’s left hand, resting her fingers in the cradle between his thumb and forefinger.
-the gentleman closes the fingers of his left hand loosely around the side of the lady’s right hand
- the gentleman’s right arm should be held as nearly as possible on the same line as his left arm.
-right hand should be placed approximately below the lady’s left shoulder blade striving to create a straight line at a downward slope from the elbow to the fingers of his right arm slightly in advance of the body
what is the difference between the words “alignment” and “Direction”
-alignment is where you are facing or backing
-direction is where you are moving
