Digestive System Flashcards
It is the chemical breakdown of complex biological molecules into their
component parts.
Digestion
Process by which organisms obtain and utilize their food.
Nutrition
Substances that provide energy and materials needed for growth, repair, and maintenance of the cell.
Nutrients
Are the main nutrients that make up the foods we eat.
Macronutrients
Are one of the major groups of nutrients your body needs. They include vitamins and minerals. Vitamins are necessary for energy production, immune function, blood clotting and other functions.
Micronutrients
Chemical breakdown of food using enzymes, bile, hydrochloric acid.
Chemical Digestion
Physical breakdown of food.
Chewing, grinding, and mixing food with mouth, tongue, and teeth.
Physical Digestion
Sifts small food particles from the water.
Whale, oysters, clams.
Suspension Feeders
Animals that live on their food source.
Caterpillar, earthworms.
Substrate Feeders
Suck nutrient-rich fluid from a living host. Mosquitos, tick, flea.
Fluid Feeders
Eats relatively large pieces of food.
Snake, lion, humans.
Bulk Feeders
Dogs, cats, humans (type of digestive system).
Monogastric (simple)
Chicken, birds, ducks (type of digestive system).
Avian
Carabao, goat, cow (type of digestive system).
Ruminants (polygastric)
Rabbit, horse, camel (type of digestive system).
Pseudo-ruminants
