Digestive System Flashcards
Teeth
- 20 deciduous (baby teeth)
- 32 permanent (adult)
Hard palate formation
Formed by palatine process of maxilla and horizontal plates of palatine bone
Soft palate
Muscular portion with center at uvula
Posterior to hard palate
Salivary glands
Send enzymes that break down carbs and start the digestive process, turns food into bolus
Salivary glands - sublingual
- Anteriorly located in chin
- beneath tongue
- opens superiorly to oral cavity
- innervated by CN VII
Salivary gland - Submandibular
- posterior to sublingual gland
- deep to mandible
- opens to oral cavity via submandibular duct
- innervated by CN VII
Salivary gland - parotid gland
- between angle of mandible and sternocleidomastoid
- by ear
- opens to oral cavity adjacent to second upper molar via parotid duct
- innervated by CN IX
Tongue
- muscular structure found on the floor of oral cavity
- functions in chewing, swallowing, phonation, taste
- supported by the genioglossus, hyoglossus, and stylogossus muscles
Pharynx
Located between oral cavity and the esophagus, has nasal, oral, and laryngeal division
Fauces
Passageway between oral cavity and pharynx formed by palatoglossal and palatopharyngeal arches
Palatoglossal (superficial) and palatopharyngeal (deep) arches
Folds in soft tissue of oral cavity
In between is palatine tonsil
Esophagus
- muscular tube connecting oral cavity and stomach
- goes through diaphragm to reach abdominal cavity
- has longitudinal muscles and circular muscles to do peristalsis
- epiglottis is closed so no food goes into trachea
Peristalsis
Contraction and relaxation of bowls to push food through the intestines
