CNS Flashcards
Prosencephalon
Forebrain
Telencephalon
Cerebrum
What connects the 2 hemispheres of the brain
Corpus callosum
What is gray matter made of and where is it
- superficial in the cerebral cortex
- neurons and glia
What is white matter made of, where is it
- deep in cerebral cortex
- myelinated axons
Frontal lobe
Includes primary motor (pre central gyrus) and pre motor/ supplementary motors areas, association areas
Parietal lobe
Primary sensory (post central gyrus)
Association areas
Temporal lobe
Contains primary auditory area (superior temporal gyrus)
Occipital lobe
Primary visual (calcarine fissure) and visual association areas
Basal Ganglia
Subcortical nuclei that include caudate, puta,en, globes pallidus, and subthalamic nucleus
Diencephalon
Thalamus and hypothalamus
Thalamus
Major relay station for sensory functions, not olfaction
Hypothalamus
Maintenance of homeostasis and equilibrium. Controls motivated behaviors. Connected to autonomic and endocrine systems. Connected to pituitary gland by infundibulum.
Mesencephalon
Midbrain:
- cerebral peduncles
- substantia nigra
- red nucleus
- motor nuclei of cranial nerves 3 and 4
- tectum
Cerebral peduncles
Involved in the lateral and anterior corticospinal tracts. Motor
Substantia nigra
Functions with basal ganglia
Red nucleus
Vascular. Start of rubrospinal tract
Tectum
Contains superior and inferior colliculi
Rhombencephalon
Hindbrain
Metencephalon
Pons and cerebellum
