Diffusion and Osmosis and Active Transport Flashcards
Diffusion definition
Net movement of molecules from region of
high concentration to a region of low concentration down a concentration gradient
When does diffusion stop happening?
When equilibrium is reached
When the gradient is steeper…
… The particles will flow faster
What affects rate of diffusion? (5)
- Concentration gradient
- Temperature
- Surface area
- Size of molecules
- Distance molecules travel
What is water potential?
How many water molecules present
What does osmosis happen through?
Partially permeable membrane
What does reliability mean?
Done many times and have got similar answer each time
Where does active transport happen? (5)
- Phloem
- Xylem
- Root hair cells
- Villi
- Kidneys
Active transport definition
Movement of ions in or out the cell through cell membrane from LOWER concentration to HIGHER concentration AGAINST concentration gradient
Why is energy used for active transport?
Harder to go from LOWER concentration to HIGHER concentration
Where are villi found?
Ileum
