Diffusion Flashcards
Name a gas that is diffused out of cells?
Carbon dioxide
Defiine the term diffusion?
Diffustion is when particles slowly form an area of high concentration to a low concentration down a concentration gradient
How does the surface area affect the rate of diffusion
The larger the surface area to volume ratio the faster the rate of diffusion occurs
How does the temperature affect the rate of diffusion?
The rate increases because when heated the particles have an increase they move faster
How does concentration the rate of diffusion?
The larger the concentration gradient the faster the rate of diffusion
Describe how human lungs are adapted for efficient gasous exchange?
Dvarevedi: have a larger surface area and have a good blood supply to keep up the concentration gradient
Aveoli: The aveoli walls are thin, so diffusion happens quickly
Describe how plant roots and leaves are adapted for effiecient gaseous exchange?
They have a large surface area to volume ratio and stomata which allows carbon dioxide into the leaf
Which features allow efficient gaseuos exchange for most organisms?
- large surface area
- thin walls in the aveoli
- good blood supply to keep up the concentration
Describe how fish gills are adapted for efficeint gaseous exchange?
The gills have a large surface area to volume ratio and there is only a short distance required for diffusuion to go. The outer layer of gills are thin
