Differentiate between resource smoothing and resource levelling Flashcards
1
Q
Resource Smoothing
A
- Used when the time constraints take priority
- The objective is complete the work by the required date while avoiding peaks and troughs of resource demand
- Resource levelling is used when limits on the availability of resources are paramount
- Time-limited scheduling; time is relatively more important than cost
- Can be applied to ensure that resources are used as efficiently as possible
- Involves utilising float or increasing/ decreasing resources for specific activities
- Peaks and troughs of resource usage are evened out
- Does not affect project duration
2
Q
Resource Levelling
A
- Technique in project management that overlooks resource allocation and resolves possible conflict arising from over-allocation
- When project manager undertake a project, they need to plan their resources accordingly
- Resource-limited scheduling
- Applied when there are resource constraints
- Forces the amount of work not to exceed the amount of resource available
- Asks the question ‘with the resources available, when will the work be finished?’
- Can result in durations being extended or delayed at both activity and project level
