Diathermy Flashcards
diathermy
heat all the way thru a tissue (diameter)
E-field and B-field
Electric Field
forces of attraction between opposite charged particles
sides flip + to - 27 mill x/sec
friction of ion particles creates heat
water filled areas heat up more quickly
diples
dipoles will SPIN because they have a + end and a - end
moving ions to reestablish the concentration gradient
E-field =
Capacitive
2 plates/pads on either side of area and thus creates an electric field for the ions to move
Magnetic Field
moving E => B (and vice versa)
penetrates the body 5 cm and induces eddy currents
cause charged particles to spin and can restart Na/K pump
B field =
Inductive
energy thru coil to create a magnetic field and thus eddy currents
can have one plate or coil that wraps around extremity
selective heating of diathermy
needs H2O and thus fat will not heat - yay works in out favor
Continuous Diathermy
continuous current is applied to the applicator
thermal effects
AC (alt current) - alternated creating the eddy current
Pulsed Diathermy
pulses of current are applied to the applicator
less heat generated, non thermal effects
Biophysical Effects
Electric field ion oscillation, dipole rotation, e- cloud motion Materials more action in high water materials Magnetic fields eddy currents, fat - wont heat up
Thermal Effects (continuous)
VD
tissue extensibility inc
pain relief
Nonthermal effects
cellular level repolarize damaged cells (remix ions) Na/K pumo fibroblasts (eat Ca and spew collagen) nerve regeneration
Application/ Pros
can treat large area
1 layer of towel is enough but MANDATORY bc sweat will create a burn and need to keep it absorbed
Cons
stray electric field
if stand too close PT/family can feel warmpth esp if wearing metal
enough to light up a florescent light bulb in in area of machine
Indications
Chronic - continuous
pain spasm, jt stiffness, reflex heating, pelvic infla disease
Sub-scute or acute - pulsed
any
BIG areas that need to be heated up esp deeper
