Diarrhea Meds Flashcards
Atropine sulfate (Donnatol)
Anticholinergic effects
Atropine sulfate (Donnatol) Class
Anti-cholinergic
Loperamide (Immodium) Class
Opiod agonist
Diphenoxylate (Lomotil) Class
Opiod agonist
Codeine sulfate Class
Opiod agonist
Metamucil (Colace) Class
Colloid
Bismuth subsalicylate (Kaopectate) Class
Pectin
Atropine sulfate (Donnatol) MOA
Relax all bowel smooth muscle (because most innervation of the bowel is cholinergic)
Loperamide (Immodium) MOA
Less penetration to CNS; stimulates _ receptors in GI tract; increased rectal tone leading to segmentation of colon and disruption of peristalsis, leading to increased absorption time
Diphenoxylate (Lomotil) MOA
Less penetration to CNS; stimulates _ receptors in GI tract: increased rectal tone leading to segmentation of colon and disruption of peristalsis, leading to increased absorption time; combined with atropine (anti-cholinergic narcotic), which relaxes bowel smooth muslce
Codeine sulfate MOA
Less penetration to CNS; stimulates _ receptors in GI tract: increased rectal tone leading to segmentation of colon and disruption of peristalsis, leading to increased absorption time; combined with atropine (anti-cholinergic narcotic), which relaxes bowel smooth muslce
Metamucil (Colace) MOA
Absorb water
Bismuth subsalicylate (Kaopectate) MOA
Absorb water
Atropine sulfate (Donnatol) Therapies
Diarrhea
Loperamide (Immodium) Therapies
Diarrhea; irritable bowel syndrome (diarrhea)
Diphenoxylate (Lomotil) Therapies
Diarrhea
Codeine sulfate Therapies
Diarrhea
Metamucil (Colace) Therapies
Diarrhea
Bismuth subsalicylate (Kaopectate) Therapies
Diarrhea
Diphenoxylate (Lomotil) Misc
Contraindication: children (narcotic will cause respiratory suppression); Lomotil = diphenoxylate + atropine
Codeine sulfate Misc
Contraindication: children (narcotic will cause respiratory suppression)
Metamucil (Colace) Misc
Doesn’t prevent potential dehydration
Bismuth subsalicylate (Kaopectate) Misc
Doesn’t prevent potential dehydration
