Diagnostic tests for fluid and electrolyte balance Flashcards
This test gives direct information on extracellular levels and indirect information on intracellular levels of the electrolytes.
Levels of serum electrolytes- sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium, chloride, and phosphate
This lab test indicates renal function
Blood urea nitrogen BUN, creatine
This lab test gives information on hydration status, useful in managing fluid requirements
Serum osmolarity/osmolality
This lab test indicates oxygen carrying capacity, fluid volume deficit/excess.
Red blood cells, hemoglobin, hematocrit
This lab test indicates colloid oncotic pressure capability
Levels of serum albumin
This lab test gives information about the hydrogen ion concentration in the urine. Increases or decreases based on acid-base balance.
Urinalysis pH
This test shows increase when fluid volume is concentrated, and low when there is a fluid volume excess.
Urinalysis specific gravity
This test reflects solute concentration of the urine. urine osmolarity/osmolality is increased in fluid volume deficit and decreased in fluid volume excess.
urinalysis
urine osmolarity/osmolality
This is a common diagnostic test that diagnosis UTIs and helpful in detecting diseases and disorders unrelated to renal system. Reagent strip is used
