Activity, immobility, and safe movement (Chapter 28) Flashcards
The ability to walk without the need of any kind of assistance.
Ambulation
Transfer belts should be used for patients with what two things?
- unsteady gait
- generalized weakness
How much room should there be between the patient and a transfer or gait belt?
2 fingers should fit between.
On which side should the nurse stand when patient is ambulating?
Nurse should stand on the weak side and hold gait belt firmly at back of patient’s waist.
When using a cane, the patient should hold the cane on their _______ side and move the cane forward ________, followed by the ________ leg and then the __________ leg.
Stronger; first; weak; strong
What are the three different types of canes?
Quad cane, Curved handle aluminum cane, and offset handle cane.
What are the two different types of crutches?
underarm and forearm crutches
This pattern is used by patients in crutches who can bear partial weight on either or both lower extremities. Patients move one crutch forward simultaneously with the opposite leg, providing wide base for support.
2-Point crutch walking pattern
This pattern is employed by patients who have 1 injured leg. Both crutches are placed forward and patients swing their legs to the center of their crutches.
3-point crutch walking pattern
This pattern requires partial weight bearing on both lower extremities. Patient moves one crutch forward, followed by the opposing leg, and repeats the pattern by moving the opposite crutch and then the leg forward.
4-point crutch gait
Metal ambulation aids that come with and without wheels. Can be used for patients who have weakness or balance problems or who are recovering from back or leg injuries.
Walkers
Patients being discharged with assistive devices should have a __________ to ensure safety during ambulation.
Home assessment
What is needed to decrease patient handling injuries? Includes lift technology, assistive devices, education, a culture of safety in the workplace, commitment from all involved parties, and and routine evaluation from the program.
Comprehensive safe patient handling approach
A triangular device that is suspended above the bed to facilitate repositioning and transfers.
Trapeze
The distance a joint can move in any direction that is considered normal for the patient.
Range of Motion
