Diagnosing and Dealing with a Rig Flashcards
Diagnosis of Cryptorchidism
Scrotal & inguinal regions should be palpated carefully
Rectal Examination- Not advised
Diagnostic Imaging
Hormonal assays
Name of hormone used to diagnose a rig
Anti-mullerian Hormone (AMH)
Is Antimullerian hormone higher or lower in cryptorchid stallions or geldings
Serum concentrations of AMH are significantly higher in cryptorchid stallions than in geldings, in which AMH concentrations are low to undetectable
Outline Testosterone and oestrone Sulfate Concentration to test for a rig
Horse is cryptorchid if conc both before & after hCG administration is > 100 pg/mL
Horse is a gelding if conc in both samples is < 40 pg/mL
Treatment of rigs
Laparotomy- Technique of choice
Cryptorchid Castration- Inguinal Approach
Hormonally-Induced Descent
