What is diabetic sensory neuropathy and

A

Loss of temperature, vibration and pain (deep sensation goes first so feels like they are walking on cotton wool)

They also get loss of interosseous muscles, high arching of the food and claw toes

A

this is where you get painfull burning or crawling feeling in their shins

Treatment = neuropathic pain killer (amytriptaline)

A

This is painfull wasting of the quadriceps muscles

Treatment is with IV immunoglobulins

What is autonomic neuropathy and what is the treatment?

A

here you get features of:

  • Postural hypotension
  • decreased sweating
  • Gastroparesis
  • Diarrhoea
  • Bladder dysfunction
  • Erectile dysfunction

Treatment is with metoclopermide + erythromycin + dopamine
