Diabetes - Microcytic complications Flashcards
Name the microcytic complications in the eye
- Diabetic retinopathy
- Diabetic maculopathy
- Cateracts
- Glaucoma
Name the renal microcytic complications
- Diabetic nephropahty
how does diabetic nephropathy occur?
- Glucose damages the basement membrane
- Insulin causes efferent constriction
3, increase in mesangial cells
This leads to glomeruloscleosis and microalbuminemia in the urine
what is the treatment of diabetic nephropathy
as soon as microalbuminemia is detected give an ACEi
What are the neurological microcytic complications
- Sensorymotor neuropathy
- Acute painful neuropathy
- Diabetic amytropy
- Multineuritis multiplex
- Autonomic neuropathy
What is sensorimotor neuropathy
this is when you loose the sensation of temperature, vibration and pain. (deep sensation is lost first)
What is acute painful neuropathy?
this is a burning pain in the shins of diabetics
What is multi neuritis multiplex
this is CNS 6 & 3 damage + sciatic nerve damage (foot drop)
what is autonomic neuropathy
this is loss of sweating, postural hypotension, gastroparsesis, diahorrea, bladder dysfunction, erectile dysfunction
what is diabetic amyotrophy
this is painful wasting of the quadriceps
how do you treat diabetic amyotrophy
IV immunoglobulins
