explain BG levels in relation to Dx

A

must take Hx into account with the values

  • Random blood glucose = >11 mmol/L = diabetes
  • not the best approach, less accurate because meals are not accounted for
  • Fasting glucose = >= 7mmol/L
  • GTT = > 11mmol/L

A
  • highest affinity for glucose of all Hb subclasses
  • glycosylated Hb
  • binding of glucose is permanent (until RBCs die)
  • monitors success of Tx and hyperglycemia over past 3-4 months
