Diabetes Dx Flashcards
1
Q
what are 3 things you would gather to Dx DM?
A
1) Hx
2) BG levels
3) Hgb A1c >6.5%
2
Q
explain Hx in relation to Dx
A
3 P’s; won’t confirm Dx but will make DM a good candidate for a Dx
3
Q
explain BG levels in relation to Dx
A
must take Hx into account with the values
- Random blood glucose = >11 mmol/L = diabetes
- not the best approach, less accurate because meals are not accounted for
- Fasting glucose = >= 7mmol/L
- GTT = > 11mmol/L
4
Q
explain HgbA1C in relation to Dx
A
- highest affinity for glucose of all Hb subclasses
- glycosylated Hb
- binding of glucose is permanent (until RBCs die)
- monitors success of Tx and hyperglycemia over past 3-4 months
