Low blood glucose concentrations may cause what?
Unconsciousness
So if low blood glucose concentrations cause unconsciousness, what does high blood glucose concentrations cause?
Tiredness and can damage organs, such as the eyes
What happens in Type 1 diabetes?
The pancreas does not produce insulin
When does Type 2 diabetes usually occur?
When the cells in a persons body respond less well to insulin, the cells start to become resistant to insulin.
What does BMI stand for?
Body Mass Index
What does a BMI do?
It gives an estimate of how healthy a person’s mass is for their height
How do you find out someone’s BMI?
Weight in kilograms over height in metres squared
People who have a disease called diabetes cannot do what?
Control their blood sugar levels very well
How might the control of Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes differ?
Type 1 you inject insulin. Type 2 you do exercise and have a low sugar diet
What is Type 1 Diabetes caused by?
A lack of insulin
What is Type 2 diabetes caused by?
When a person is resistant to insulin
What is ‘insulin’?
A hormone that controls blood sugar level
