Definitions Flashcards
What is sickle cell anaemia?
It is a genetic disorder caused by faulty alleles.
What happens in Sickle Cell Anaemia?
The red blood cells stick together and block blood vessels.
The blocking of blood vessels can sometimes be fatal because suffers can have joint pain because not enough oxygen gets to the muscles.
The sickle cells block the capillaries (blood vessels)
Who suffers from Sickle Cell Anaemia?
The sickle cell allele is recessive, so people who have two copies of the allele suffer from the disorder.
What is Cystic Fibrosis and how is it caused?
Cystic fibrosis is a genetic disorder caused by a recessive allele.
What happens in Cystic Fibrosis?
In cystic fibrosis, the lungs get clogged with thick mucus which then makes breathing difficult which can lead to infections.
The enzymes can’t get to their small intestine, which causes us to not be able to break down their food and grow.
What is ‘Thermoreregulation’?
The control of body temperature
What are ‘Sensory Neurones’?
Neurones that receives impulses from receptors
What are ‘Motor Neurones’?
Neurones that take impulses to effectors
What are ‘Relay Neurones’?
Short neurones that are found in the spinal cord, where they link motor and sensory neurones.
