Carbon And Nitrogen Cycle Flashcards
With the Carbon Cycle, what leads off bacteria?
- Respiration which leads to Carbohydrates in animals
2. This then joins with respiration from starch in plants and joins back into the atmosphere as Carbon Dioxide
Describe how an atom of Carbon goes from the atmosphere to a fossil fuel. Include the processes.
It starts in the atmosphere
It then goes to starch in plants
From here feeding takes place which takes it to carbohydrates in animals
But the quickest route is to go from starch in plants, which then decomposes to become bacteria and into a fossil fuel
What is Nitrogen Gas?
Very unreactive
Describe the Carbon Cycle
- It starts as Carbon Dioxide in the atmosphere.
- Photosynthesis by plants converted into glucose
- Respiration uses glucose to create Carbon Dioxide which is then released back into atmosphere
- This then becomes decomposed and leads to fossils fuels
One group of bacteria in the soil break down nitrate ions so that nitrogen is not available to plants.
Name this group of bacteria
Denitrifying bacteria
In the Carbon Cycle what is the only thing that removes Carbon Dioxide from the air?
Photosynthesis by plants
How does Dentrifying Bacteria differ from nitrogen fixing bacteria?
Dentrfpifying bacteria converts nitrates
What happens after decomposing?
Feeding by animals as they eat off carbon compounds found in plants and animals
Decomposers feed off dead organisms with Carbon Dioxide released back into the atmosphere as a waste gas
Describe the nitrogen cycle
Plants get nitrogen from their roots from absorbing nitrogen compounds
Animals get it from food
What is the point of nitrogen?
So that organisms can get protein and other substances in the new tissue as they grow
