Classification - Kingdoms Flashcards
What is the process called where organisms are put into groups based on what they look like?
Classification
What are the five kingdoms of organisms?
Animalia, Plantae, Fungi, Protoctista and Prokaryotae
If some organisms are unicellular, what does it mean?
They have single cells
If some organisms are multicellular, what does this mean?
It means they are made of many cells
How do plants make their food?
Autotrophically using photosynthesis
How do animals feed?
Animals feed heterotrophically by eating and digesting other organisms
So if plants make their food autotrophically using photosynthesis and animals feed heterotrophically by eating and digesting other organisms, how do fungi get their food?
Fungi get their food by digesting other organisms, but do this outside the body and our said to feed SAPROPHYTICALLY
What are the main characteristics of the Animalia kingdom?
Multicellular
Heterotrophic feeders, which means they have no chlorophyll
No cell walls
Complex wall structure with nucleus
What are the main characteristics of the Plantae kingdom?
Multicellular
Autotrophic feeders which means they USE chlorophyll
They have cells walls made of cellulose
They have the same as Animalia as they have a complex cell structure with nucleus
What are the main characteristics of Fungi?
Multicellular
Saprophytic feeders so they have NO chlorophyll
Cell walls NOT made of cellulose
Again, complex cell structure with nucleus
What are the main characteristics of Protoctista?
Unicellular
Again, complex cell structure with nucleus
Finally, what are the main characteristics of Prokaryotae?
Unicellular
Simple cell structure with NO Nucleus
What are characteristics?
What they look like
