Pollution Indicators Flashcards
What do freshwater shrimp indicate?
High oxygen in water
What do blood worms indicate?
High pollution or low oxygen
What does stonefly lava indicate then?
High oxygen in water
What do bloodworms and sludge worms have to help them carry oxygen?
Large surface areas and lots of haemoglobin
What do sludge worms indicate?
Low oxygen
How can scientists use Blackspot Fungus to estimate level of air pollution in an area
Estimate it on roses, if there is more pollution than there is lower levels of Black Spot Fungus
What is eutrophication?
Eutrophication is where there is a reduction of oxygen in water.
How is eutrophication caused?
It is caused by the overuse of nitrates (fertilisers) which are then washed into rivers.
What happens when eutrophication takes place?
As there is no oxygen in water, fish die.
What are ‘Indicator Species’?
Organisms that are very sensitive to changes in their environment that they can’t live in some conditions
Stonefly Larvae or Freshwater Shrimps indicate what?
Clean water
What can Stonefly Larvae and Freshwater Shrimp not live in?
A place where there’s not much oxygen in the water
If there is Blood Worms or Sludgeworms the water is what?
Polluted
What can Blood Worms or Sludgeworms live in?
Water without much oxygen
