what is type 1 diabetes?
unusually diagnosed young, when pancreas is attacked so unable to produce insulin (autoimmune)
what is the treatment for type 1 diabetes?
life long insulin injections
what is type 2 diabetes?
when the pancreas is unable to produce enough insulin or insulin produces doesn’t work
what are 3 risk factors for type 2 diabetes?
age
overweight
poor diet
what is the medication used to treat diabetes?
metformin
What is Diabetic Ketoacidosis? (DKA)
hyperglycaemia
what can cause DKA? (3)
poorly manages diabetes
infections
stress
what is the pathology of DKA
gluscoe cannot be broken down due to insulin insufficiency so fatty acid is used for energy which results in ketone release as waste.
what is the treatment for DKA
slow fluids and treatment nausea
what is low blood sugar?
hypoglycaemia
what BM is called as hypoglycaemic?

what is the treatment for hypoglycaemia?
oral sugar or IV glucose depending on GCS
