CVE Flashcards
what is ischemia?
having decreased o2 supply to tissues as well as tissues having increased o2 demand
where is the anterior cerebral artery located?
Motor and Somatic cortex
Signs of Anterior cerebral artery occlusion
loss of lower body sensation contra-laterally
loss of lower body motor control contra-laterally
Where is the middle cerebral artery located?
Motor and lateral somatic cortex
Signs of middle cerebral artery occlusion
contra-lateral loss of motor and sensation to upper body Brocas aphasia (dysarthria)
where is the posterior cerebral artery located
occipital lobe
Signs of posterior cerebral artery occlusion
homonymors hemianopia (loss of temporal and nasal visual field)
What is Locked in syndrome
bilateral paralysis but completely alert with eye movement as a result of basilar artery occlusion
what is medullary syndrome?
dysarthria, dysphasia loss of motor control and loss of proprioception (anterior spinal osculation)
Management of CVE/TIA
exclude hypoglycaemia
300mg aspirin unless contraindicated
admit to ED
list 4 differentials of CVE
hypoglycaemia, seizure, vertigo, infection (sepsis)
pathology of ischemic stroke
blockage of artery either by clots or plaque
