Developmental Milestones 16.2.24 Flashcards
What is an Apophysis?
Secondary ossification centre
What does an Apophysis form?
Forms an insertion point for a ligament or tendon
It does not form direct articulation with another bone at a joint
What is an Epiphysis?
Distal end of a long bone involved in articulation
What age does the 5th Apophysis appear and fuse?
Apophysis of the 5th metatarsal base appears on X-rays
:Girls - age 10
:Boys - age 12
Fusion is usually within 2-4 years following
Where is the Calcaneal Apophysis?
When does it appear and fuse?
The Apophysis for the posterior extremity of the calcareous appears at 10 years and unites after puberty
What is sever disease in the Calcaneal Apophysis and what causes it?
Inflammation of the growth plate in the Calcaneal
Caused by repetitive stress tot he heel.
Common in active children
What is the Geist classification used to classify?
Accessory navicular classification
= 3 types
Where are the Metatarsal and metacarpal epiphysis found?
1st epiphyses are proximal
2nd - 5th are distal
What is a Psuedoepiphysis?
A second ossification centre distinct from the normal epiphysis
What is an Ivory epiphysis?
Sclerosis of the epiphyses - looks like ivory on X-ray
What is a Cleft epiphysis?
A normal variant of an epiphysis - can be unilateral or bilateral
Often mistaken for a fracture
