What is the aim of naughty teddy study?
Aim
To see whether the child’s reaction would be different if there was no deliberate change in the row of counters
Hughes policeman doll study:Aim
Aim
Martin Hughes suggested young children may have less difficulty in tasks if it made social sense to them. His aim was to create a test that would be more understandable and see if children could cope better with the egocentrism task.
What is the method of naughty teddy study?
Method
80 children from Edinburgh (40 in nursery and 40 in primary school). They were introduced to naughty teddy who escapes from his box and spoils childrens games. The teddy pushed equally spaced counters so one row was shorter than the other. The children were asked if the rows were the same size or bigger or smaller
What is the results/conclusion of naughty teddy study?
Results and conclusion
41% of children gave the correct answer (‘’they are the same in each row’’) 68% gave the right answer if the change was accidental. The primary school figures were higher than nursery. The traditional method of testing conservation underestimated what children can do. Many nursery children could conserve quantity which PIaget said they couldn’t. The primary school children did do better which supports that there are differences in age
What is the evaluation of naughty teddy study?
Evaluation
One weakness is the primary age children all came from one school One weakness is that childrens; better performance in the accidental condition could be because they didn’t notice any changes. One strength is that is it challenges some of Piagets assumptions
Hughes policeman doll study:Method
Method
He tested 30 children aged 3 ½ to 5 years old and they were all from edinburgh. Each child was introduced to the task very carefully. He or she was shown a model with two intersecting walls. The policeman doll was placed with the child to one side. He put a boy doll in each section and asked if the policeman could see the boy doll (they wouldn’t;’t be able to see the dolls in section A or C). The policeman moved to point X and the child asked to hide the boy doll from the policeman. If the child made any mistakes their error was pointed out and the task repeated.
Hughes policeman doll study:Results
Results
90% of children were able to position the boy doll where two policemen could not ‘see’ him.
In more complex trials, using 5 or 6 sections, the three year olds had more trouble (60% trials correct) The four year olds had a 90% success rate.
Hughes policeman doll study:Conclusion
Conclusions
The study shows PIaget underestimated young children’s abilities. If the task is designed in a way which is related to everyday experience, the younger children are able to see the world from another person’s perspective.
What is the evaluation of Dweck’s mindset theory?
One strength is research evidence that shows a growth mindset leads to better grades.
One weakness is that any sort of praise may be damaging.
One strength is that the mindset theory can be applied to many different settings such as schools, sports, business and relationships
What is the evaluation of the role of praise and self-efficacy?
One weakness is that using praise to encourage learning is that it may reduce rather than increase motivation
One strength is support from research that shows reduced self-efficacy leads to poor performance.
What is the evaluation of learning styles?
One strength is that traditional teaching methods may have been to focused on verbal methods alone
One weakness is that there is no evidence that learning styles improve performance
One weakness is that the sheer number of different learning styles means its impossible to put in into practice
What is the evaluation of Willinghams learning theory?
One strength is that all his concepts are drawn from scientific research.
One strength is that it is specially focused on applications to learning.
One weakness is that the diagnosis on the basis of brain difference may not be possible
What is the evaluation of Piaget’s stages of cognitive development
One weakness is that he underestimates what young children are capable of.
One weakness is that he overestimated what older children are capable of.
One strength is that the evidence still supports the view that children go through stages as they develop and get older
What is the evaluation of Piaget’s application in education?
One strength is that his theory had an enormous effect of primary education in the UK
One weakness is that piaget’s stage based approach suggests that practice should not improve performance is a child is not ready
One weakness is that Piaget’s emphasis on discovery learning may not always be the best approach.
What is the evaluation of Hughes’ policeman doll study?
One strength of this study is that the task used to test egocentrism made more sense to children than piaget’s version
One weakness is that the researcher may have unconsciously hinted at the correct answer
