development of attachment types Flashcards
Genetics-
Genetic predisposition (strange situation) TWIN studies= MZ-70%, DZ-64% suggesting genetics plays a limited role 2001 study oconner and croft showed; only 14% to genetics 32% to shared environment 53% to non shared environment
Maternal sensitivity hypothesis
Responding to infants queues
quality and sensitivity of maternal-infant contact predicts attachment types
mothers who are more rejecting more likely type A with child
Mothers who more inconsistent= type C
Maternal Mind Mindedness (Meins et al)
treating an infant as an individual with its own mind and responding to infants’ needs and mental state.
Meins et al study-
Internal working models
template for how we think relationships with others exist.
Maternal depression
Keppinnim et al (2006) assessed maternal sensitivity in Finnish mothers at 2 months then 24 months. Found those with low maternal sensitivity scores and high maternal control reported low child cooperation- Importantly 80% of these mothers reported prenatal depressive symptoms
McMahon 2006 found mothers with depressive symptoms are more likely to have children with insecure attachments
