deuterostomes (exam3) Flashcards
Are deuterostomes vertebrates or invertebrates?
they can be both
In deuterostomes does the mouth or anus form first?
anus
What are echinoderms?
a branch of deuterostomes
How does symmetry change in juvenile/adult echinoderms?
-bilaterally symmetrical larvae
-radially symmetrical adults (no head)
What are the exoskeletons of echinoderms made of?
calcium carbonate
All deuterostomes live in ____ environments.
marine
Describe the “water vascular system” in echinoderms
-Tubes on the inside of the organism fill with and release water based on the beating of cilia.
-Tube feet project from the system.
-This acts as a movement structure.
What are chordates?
a branch of deuterostomes
Pharyngeal gill slits
openings into the throat or pouches in the throat
Notochord
-a stiff & supportive but flexible rod that runs the length of the body
-lost in many adult vertebrates
Dorsal hollow nerve cord
the brain and spinal cord
What is the body plan of cephalochordates?
have all 4 parts and look like a small tube/fish
What is the body plan of urochordates?
have all 4 parts as a juvenile, but loose everything except the pharyngeal gill slits as adults
How do the 4 main body parts function in vertebrates?
-the dorsal hollow nerve cord becomes the spinal cord
-pharyngeal slits can develop into gills
-the tail occurs in all lineages but can be lost
-the notochord usually functions as cells in the spinal disks
are vertebrates a monophyletic group?
yes
